Quincy council approves $23 million more for public safety building
The vote at the Nov. 21 Council meeting was 7 to 1, with Councilor Anne Mahoney voting against the spending. She said she supported the police but objected to the administration’s failure to use federal COVID relief money to avoid passing the entire cost to taxpayers. Mahoney also questioned whether the design had been revised to save money.

"It's all about getting back to local," Anne Mahoney said. "With the pandemic, we were all so focused on the federal level and everything that was going on nationwide with the presidential election. ... As we got back to focusing on the local level, we realized it was hard for publications and even QATV to get the news out. We thought this would be an alternative."

Heated debate between city councilors shows little support for new Quincy College, city hall
Anne Mahoney, an at-large city councilor, questioned the school's enrollment projections, financial history and a study commissioned by the city that says Quincy College brings in $50 million of economic benefit to the city each year. She also said that 81 percent of the school's students come from outside of Quincy, and that it doesn't seem right for taxpayers to shoulder the burden to serve so many people who don't live in Quincy.

This Thursday, the Quincy City Finance Committee will meet and possibly vote on a $23 million acquisition of the Munroe Building and a parking lot a block away. The administration plans to build a new 16-story – 200K sq ft building to house Quincy College and a new city hall that could open 2026-2027.
